WHAT IS YOUR HARRY POTTER BOOK WORTH? FIRST EDITION vs FIRST PRINTING
Your Harry Potter Books Might Be Worth Big Bucks
Dust off your robes for a trip to Gringotts. Some copies ofHarry Pottermight be worth quite a few galleons — up to ,000 in muggle money to be exact. Rare bookseller AbeBooks recently published a guide to collecting the popular fantasy series, and while the valuations vary based on the book number, there are a few rules of thumb.
Anything signed by author J.K. Rowling generally puts the copy in the four-figure range (the celebrity author did fewer signings as her success grew). Even more valuable, however, are first editions ofHarry Potter and the Philosopher's Stonewhere the book is credited to "Joanne Rowling." The writer later famously used her two initials to appeal to male readers (who might not want to read a book written by a woman).
Of course, the best-selling book series of all time entertained millions of people around the globe. And while it usually takes decades for a title to gain value on the rare book market, the universally-beloved franchise has quickly grown as a collector's item. While most fans own one of the 400 million not-so-rare copies, that doesn't mean they're worthless. It might just be time to read the books for the second, third, or thirty-third time.
