You'll Never Guess Who This Dapper Young Man Turned Out to Be
The internet has a way of spontaneously resurfacing old photos (which is why I'm grateful I went to college pre-camera phone). This gem featuring a familiar face from his Air Force days, brought to you by the magic of Reddit (and an editor atWoman's World), might just be the most mystifying throwback picture to circulate the web.
Can you recognize this strapping young gent? We'll give you a hint: When he left the service after 20 years, he grew out his hair (huge understatement). And you've probably been lulled to sleep by his soothing voice as he made countless happy little trees appear on 30,000 canvases.
Yep, it's Bob Ross.
Before becoming a national treasure, Ross enlisted in the Air Force in Alaska in the 1960s. It was there that he discovered his "joy of painting," but he was not so keen on his other work. "The job requires you to be a mean, tough person. And I was fed up with it," he once said. After doing his time, he grew out his signature poof and spent 11 years teaching PBS viewers how to paint (which he didn't get a dime from, by the way).
Although he grew tired of his iconic coiff (like many of us, he got a perm he later regretted), Bob was so committed to his brand that even when he lost his hair during cancer treatment, he wore a perfectly frizzy wig.
In 1995, Ross passed away from lymphoma at 52, but his legacy lives on above our mantels and on YouTube where you can stream his lessons (and take a little siesta). Bob didn't mind.
