Soft & Romantic

Soft & Romantic hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Dannielle Robeson
Stylist and Boutique Manager @ Vanity Belle Beauty Boutique in La Jolla, CA

How would you describe this look?

This look is soft and romantic. I love the one side pulled back with a pretty clip or comb. It gives a little something to a simple style without being too much.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a perfect hairstyle for showing off all the dimension in your hair color and can easily be worn with any hair length. It has so much versatility.

If you want to add extra bounce and longevity to your curls, try spraying the hair with hairspray before curling.

Voluminous Side ‘Do

Voluminous Side 'Do hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Stella Loewnich
Makeup Artist & Hairstylist @ SL Makeup and Hair in Berlin, Germany

How would you describe this look?

This is a textured, slightly messy, and voluminous side ‘do.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I think in order to pull this hairstyle off, you have to at least have hair to below your shoulder blades, but the longer the better! Clip-in extensions also work perfectly for this type of hairstyle.

I like to use a light hold hairspray to detail out the texture, keep it from frizzing up, and give a lot of volume by teasing the roots at the back of the head and the crown area.

This look is a great alternative to wearing your hair in a half up half down hairstyle, especially if you still want to show off your length. It is not as formal as an updo, but still keeps the hair in place and out of the face.

This kind of piecey, textured hairstyle would look beautiful with any type of lace detailing on a dress.

Boho Side-Swept Braid

Boho Side-Swept Braid hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Kari Hvidston
Cosmetologist @ The Mane Place in Rock Springs, WY

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a romantic, boho side-swept braid.

My favorite thing about this look is the texture and dimension that the braids, pull-throughs, and twists give it. I also really loved being able to mix the knowledge I received from classes I took from Heather Chapman, Hair and Makeup by Steph, and Jenny Strebe. Side pony styles are always a nice way to change up a look. There is even that great song “Side Pony” by Lake Street Dive!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Make sure to thoroughly prep the hair by curling the hair, using products to help give lift and texture, and making sure to choose the right side to sweep it to based on the client’s best side for pictures. These looks are perfect for many hair types, you might just need to add some clip-in extensions or a halo if your hair is on the finer side.

I prefer looks like these on hair that has been balayaged or highlighted. I think it helps add to the texture and dimension of the look.

The products I used for this look were Unite Expanda Volume Root Energizer, Kenra Volume Dry Shampoo, Big and Sexy Powder Play Lite, Kenra Air Grip Dry Spray Wax, and the Kenra Super Hold Finishing Spray 25. My go-to tools are the Babyliss Pro line and my 1 1/4-inch Babyliss curling iron.

Side-Swept Glam Curls

Side-Swept Glam Curls hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Jill Marie Campbell
Freelance Hair & Make-up Artist in Dayton, OH

How would you describe this look?

These are glam curls that swept to the side with volume throughout. I love how elegant this look is.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This client had extremely thick hair, so the look was easily achieved.

To achieve this look, use a smaller sized wand, curling the hair all in the same direction. Let the curls cool, then create volume throughout by using the Big and Sexy teasing product, teasing the hair sections. Follow up by smoothing the hair down with a brush and Aquage Shine Spray. Brush the curls at the bottom so they are not so tight, then piece out the curls while spraying with Kenra 13 or 14. Finish by sweeping all of the curls to one side and spraying with Kenra 25 to keep it all in place.

If you are wanting an elegant or glam look, this is an awesome hairstyle to consider!

Princess Hair

Princess Hair hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Michelle Mayer
Hairstylist @ Obadiah Salon in Bellevue and Kirkland, WA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as effortless side-swept curls or princess hair. My favorite thing about it is that it doesn’t feel too “done” or stiff. It still maintains a softness as opposed to something like an extremely structured chignon or slicked back ponytail.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Whoever is looking to do this look needs to have length to their hair or extensions that can be added for length or fullness. My client in the picture just has insane amounts of hair, but for most, I would highly recommend adding some clip-in extensions for body. I used a very healthy amount of Swept Up by Oribe for added texture and hold. A wonderful amount of hairspray and bobby pins are a must too, of course.

I recommend this look for a school formal, wedding, or black tie event. It looks best with an off the shoulder dress or sleeveless dress, but nothing high necked because it can detract from the overall look and hairstyle.

Loose Side-Swept Style

Loose Side-Swept Style hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Lauren Treat
Stylist / Hair Extraordinaire / Color Specialist @ Studio 2121 in Little Rock, AR

How would you describe this look?

Hair trends are constantly evolving. I believe upstyles are currently making a shift towards more of an “effortlessly chic” vibe, and less of the partially braided/curled styles that we have seen for the past few years. I am experiencing a rise in requests for twisted and looped hair, requiring delicate pinning to achieve a romantic feel.

The side-swept style featured here encompasses the change I am seeing in the industry. She still wanted a bit of the messy look, which the loose waves and delicate pinning provide, but you don’t see any traditional braiding styles incorporated into this updo.

I love how effortless yet enchanting this style is. It’s beautiful and timeless, yet still looks fashion-forward. I love that you can start with the same base or anchor style, yet pin the wispier outer pieces of hair in virtually endless patterns to create many unique looks.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Go for it! This hairstyle is comfortable to wear and versatile for a variety of events. How intricately or extravagantly the hair is placed around the anchor will determine how dressy or laid-back the finished style will look.

Long-Lasting Side Curls

Long-Lasting Side Curls hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Justine Maggio
Freelance Hairstylist @ Beyond Hair in Sydney, NSW

How would you describe this look?

I created this look for a young girl going to her formal. She wanted volume, side curls, and a style that would last.

When people ask for side curls these days, they’re too loose and don’t have longevity, especially if the night is full of dancing and laughter!

I love the volume and the way this style is presented. It is a style that will last, even to the next day, and is something slightly different than what you are used to seeing as your everyday look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is great for all hair types. Prepping the hair before styling is the most important part. Make sure your hair is washed the night before and dried naturally with no product and no heat.

When it comes to styling, setting the hair with hot rollers to create volume is one of my secrets. My favorite products are DE Lorenzo Sand Storm Texture Dust and L’Oreal Super Dust. Hairspray is kept until the very last to avoid the style going frizzy.

Fancy Romantic Updo

Fancy Romantic Updo hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Hailey Malloy
Hairstylist @ MaZa Salon & Spa in Reno, NV

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a romantic updo for a wedding or fancy night out. My favorite thing about it is how soft and smooth everything looks. It’s simple yet stunning!

What tips or products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I recommend is starting off with curler rolls because they are the base of the entire style. For products, use a smoothing creams. If you would like more texture in the curls, use a texturizing spray/powder.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for clients with long, thick hair. This style is perfect for a wedding or special occasion. The dress style that this would look best with wouldbe a one shoulder or sleeveless dress!

Timeless Glam Waves

Timeless Glam Waves hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Kaila Gatani
Senior Hairstylist @ House of Melvin Artists For Hair in Thornlie, Perth, WA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

Honestly, this has to be one of my all time favorite looks. It’s super elegant, classy and timeless. It is perfect for prom with a strapless gown.

What tips or products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I always like to wash and blow dry the hair first with Matrix Root Lifting Spray, along with a smoothing oil for flyways. This way when you start to wind, you’re not fighting those horrible flyways!

Make sure you’re always using clean sections and curl the hair all in the same direction, otherwise you will get uneven curls. A light spray wax at the end is always great to get the waves to all stick together. I actually used a medium ghd iron to achieve this look, but for more intense wave, I would use the medium ghd wand.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look can be quite difficult to acheive on clients with thin hair or coarse, wirey hair! Most clients I recommend this look for either have the thickness or extensions.

This is the perfect style because the next day, you can simply brush it out and have natural beach waves!

Modern Braided Touch

Modern Braided Touch hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Kyleigh Mills
Hairstylist / Deva Curl Certified / Bridal Hair Specialist @ Rapture Salon in Pembroke, MA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look to be classy with a modern braided touch. My client wanted a sleek but detailed look for a formal event in the city!

What tips or products do you recommend to recreate this look?

Prepping the hair is key. I used a thermal setting spray by Kenra before I curled her hair to protect and hold the curl. I then used Kenra’s Whipped Taffy to tame any flyaways on the hair shaft before braiding or pinning.

To finish, I sprayed with Kenra Flexible hairspray and a mist of Aquage shine spray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this style to anyone going to a special event such as a wedding, gala, prom, bridal show, etc.

Formal Side-Swept Style

Formal Side-Swept Style hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Lea Grungo
Stylist @ Hello Gorgeous Salon & Spa in Sicklerville, NJ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a side-swept formal/wedding style. It’s beautiful, fun and stylistically timeless.

My favorite thing about it is the touchable, classy look to it. It doesn’t look as if it’s weighed down with a ton of hair products. The curls look bouncy and full.

What tips or products do you recommend to recreate this look?

A good blowout on clean hair is important. I prep the hair by spraying Redken Hot Sets 22 thermal setting mist. Using a alternating combo of a Marcel curling iron and a curling wand, I curl the hair. After each curl, I use Matrix High Amplify hairspray. I finished the look with Matrix Vavoom Freezing hairspray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style works well with many hair types. The minimum length should be at least shoulderblade level. If the hair is on the thinner side, the use of extensions and/or hair padding can be useful!
