HARDEST (BUT BEST) DECISION EVER | MY RELOCATION STORY
Love Stories: "Best Decision Ever"
In a recent issue, REDBOOK asked readers to tell us their love stories, and you delivered, big time. This sweet tale is one of our 10 favorites. Get some tissues and read on!
I was a school bus driver and living with my parents. They lived and worked at the first college I'd attended as a "staff brat." I'd had a couple of abusive boyfriends in the past, so I had an enormous "Get Lost" sign on my forehead, and a well-established tough girl image. Guys were a waste of time, and jerks to boot. That is, until this crazy desert boy from California arrived and decided to take my "Get Lost" sign as a challenge.
He was a bus driver, too. In a college town where most jobs pay nothing, bus driving paid well. That fall, he drove the bus ahead of me in the pickup line at one of the local high schools. I always arrived early to sit and read a bit before my students loaded up, and he started coming early to hang out on my bus and chat.
I mentioned once that I enjoyed running around the neighborhood, and he offered to be my running buddy! I have fibromyalgia, and running helps me stay on my feet. He became my race cheerleader, and my motivation to run on days that my pain levels were high.
What I didn't realize through all of the chatting, running, and studying together was that he was slowly becoming my friend, and then my best friend, and then one day as I was headed home, he handed me a box of Valentines. An entire box. On each Valentine was a number and a letter. I had to arrange the numbers in order, then flip them over. The final message said, "Will you be my valentine?"
Fast forward three months, and I was away visiting my sister for a month. I was so homesick for Brian. He read me to sleep every night via video chat out of a retelling of the story ofBeauty and the Beast, called "Beauty".
My birthday came shortly after I returned home, and I received a new copy ofBeautyfrom Brian since mine was falling apart. Under the back cover were two tickets to seeBeauty and the Beastin Chicago for the next day!
I'd always had a dream to ride a carousel, so the next day when we were in Chicago, we went out to Navy Pier before the show did just that! The show was amazing, and surprisingly hilarious, but the real fireworks happened on the way home.
It was late, but he asked if I'd like to go take a walk down the pier in Milwaukee. The pier was closed, but we found a rock wall to sit on and watch the lightning storm that was making the lake sparkle like jewels.
Brian asked if he could have done anything to make my day better and I, sitting cuddled against his chest, was midway through saying "you can't possibly make my day any better" when he turned on a flashlight and attached to a string on his left hand is a gorgeous diamond solitaire.
"Beauty, will you marry me?"
What else could I say, but "YES!"
We've been married almost two years now, and he has been my sunshine on my darkest days, my advocate when I won't cut myself a break, and my shoulder when I need to cry. I love him more every day, and it's as if my whole capacity for love keeps growing like a never-ending balloon.
Our love story winners won a date night out: a gift card to Fandango, where you can watch movie trailers, check showtimes, and buy tickets; and a gift card to use either at Olive Garden, which serves fresh Italian food ranging from pasta classics to lighter fare, or LongHorn Steakhouse, which offers a wide variety of fresh, never frozen steaks.
