Career women blamed for rise in abortions
There has been a 5.7 per cent increase in abortions in women aged 30 to 34
Anti-abortion campaigners are blaming women who want to ‘have it all’ for a rise in abortions among 30-somethings.
Statistics released by the Department of Health suggest terminations carried out on women aged between 30 to 34 have increased by almost six per cent, while three per cent of those over 30 are having three or more abortions.
Josephine Quintavalle from pressure group Comment on Reproductive Ethics accused women of using abortion as a ‘form of contraception’ and said: ‘At some stage these women are going to decide they really want children and then by that stage it may be too late.’
But Ann Furedi, of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, hit back saying: ‘Abortion is a service that a third of women will need in the course of their reproductive lifetimes so they can plan the timing and size of families and play a role in society.’
Abortion is highest among women in their 20s accounting for 51 per cent of all abortions carried out in 2010. This statistics increased by a further 2 per cent in 2011.
